Mariachi is a Mexican ensemble tradition with a broad and changing repertory. UNESCO distinguishes string-centered traditional groups from modern groups that can include trumpets, violins, vihuela and guitarrón. Performers interpret regional songs, serenades and narrative ballads as well as styles absorbed over time. Learning by ear and participation in festive, religious and civic occasions have helped transmit the practice. Keeping these distinctions matters because a familiar costume or trumpet sound can otherwise substitute for understanding. This entry preserves ensemble variety, local histories and the social work of performance instead of using mariachi as a generic soundtrack for an entire country.
Why preserve it: Curatorial interpretation: Listen for the different roles inside the ensemble and how an adaptable repertory can still sustain a recognizable tradition.
Keep in mind: Traditional and modern are source categories, not rankings. No individual recording, costume design or arrangement is licensed by this entry.
