Canto a tenore is a Sardinian multipart singing practice commonly performed by four men standing close together. The vocal roles differ, including deep, guttural accompanying sounds around a leading voice. UNESCO connects the tradition with pastoral life but also describes singing in bars, at weddings and during public festivities. Lyrics may draw on older poetry or address current issues such as migration and unemployment. A close circle of singers produces a social encounter as well as a musical texture. The entry therefore emphasizes living commentary and intimate listening rather than suggesting that pastoral music belongs only to an unchanging rural past.

Why preserve it: Curatorial interpretation: A tradition can retain a distinctive vocal technique while speaking about contemporary problems.

Keep in mind: The source describes a common four-man configuration, not a prohibition on other participation. Stage versions and intimate settings have different social effects.
