Turkish coffee combines a distinctive preparation with ways of spending time together. Finely ground roasted coffee is slowly heated with water, and sometimes sugar, to create a foamy drink served in small cups. The cultural object is not just the liquid: cups, coffee pots, conversation and the obligations of a host form part of the experience. UNESCO describes coffeehouses as places to exchange news and read, and coffee as a feature of engagements, holidays and visits between friends. Some participants interpret the remaining grounds as fortunes. For a future reader, the important question is how a modest drink could organize social time and provide an accepted invitation to talk.
Why preserve it: It illustrates hospitality and public conversation through an ordinary shared beverage.
Keep in mind: This is one regional coffee tradition, not a claim of ownership over all coffee preparation. Fortune-telling is described as a cultural practice, not a reliable prediction method.
