Reggae is a Jamaican musical tradition with roots in communities that included marginalized people in western Kingston. UNESCO describes its development through earlier Jamaican styles and wider Caribbean, North American and Latin influences. It documents a progression through ska and rocksteady, alongside later musical exchanges. Reggae carries more than one mood or purpose: social criticism, spiritual expression, affection and pleasure all belong to its cultural life. Its continuation depends on people learning, performing and listening, including in schools and at festivals. This selection preserves a living practice rather than pretending that one famous performer, one record or one sound can stand for the whole tradition.
Why preserve it: Curatorial interpretation: it shows how music can make room for pleasure and political speech at the same time, and how local experiences can become audible far beyond their place of origin.
Keep in mind: Reggae is not all Jamaican music. Individual recordings retain their own rights. UNESCO recognition in 2018 is a safeguarding milestone, not a date of invention or a certificate granting reuse.
