Baul songs belong to singers whose music, poetry and ways of living have influenced Bengali culture. UNESCO describes performers who may travel between villages and earn a living through singing. Their spiritual teaching emphasizes the human body and resists conventional religious and caste boundaries. The songs are not simply entertainment detached from a philosophy: transmission also occurs through relationships between gurus and apprentices. UNESCO’s safeguarding project focused on workshops and documentation in Bangladesh, including the Kushtia region associated with Lalon Shah. This entry preserves the connection between musical expression and the people who sustain it, including the economic circumstances that make continued practice possible.

Why preserve it: Curatorial interpretation: A song can transmit an argument about how to live, while its survival depends on livelihoods as well as recordings.

Keep in mind: Bangladesh’s UNESCO nomination does not erase Baul communities in India. Avoid portraying all practitioners as identical or timeless wanderers.
